#WHATISTHEPOSITIVE - Confronting Your Fears: Perseverance

 / By Dr. Margaret Aranda /

Thank you, #WHATISTHEPOSITIV for having Dr. Margaret Aranda as Guest Speaker.

She thoroughly enjoyed being with you, as always!

~~~~~
Women are Being Empowered by Themselves
Dr Margaret Aranda was in a horrific car accident with her daughter
That was back when she could not walk in high-heeled shoes
Now bedrid and half dead from too many times to mention
Dr. Aranda faces all fears
This is a great step in "You Being you!"
So ......
How did Dr. Aranda do?
She was true to herself?
Did she even 'know' who 'she' is?
Or ... did she try to please the audience, the viewers, to make more money or sell more books?
Was she pretending to be sick for 10 years? Or is it real?
Is it painful for her to remember the car accident - that huge trauma?
She .... she was able to speak with no tears?
April is #Alcohol Addiction Month
by Dr. Margaret Aranda
Did you know: #alcohol StartEd Awareness Month in 1987
Where were you when that happened?
Image 1 1987 Ford Mustang. Beautiful muscle car that even today, makes those mouths salivate just to take a run with the top down. Ooh! Just once!
In 1987, AZT was first used to treat AIDS . That was HUGE at the time, as HIV-government protesters filled the sidewalks and entrances, picketing for better health care and specialty clinics devoted just for AIDS. The top selling car was the Ford Escort, at $ 6.895. Ford Mustang (my personal FAV) sold for $ 9.209. The USA stock market crashed in October, here.also & other world stock market crashes ( Reference ).
Everyone around me seemed quiet and reflective, but I was busy studying as a pre-med undergraduate student.  So my own head was filled with Inorganic Chemistry, Chicano Studies, Intermediate expository Writing, and Independent Study where I went room-to-room teaching about the genetics of either Tay-Sachs or Sickle Cell Disease. That was my introduction to medicine, as I lived in a bubble.
Today,  The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence  wants to rid society of the stigma associated with #alcoholism, in the hopes that people will concentrate more on getting the diagnosis, receiving therapy, heading toward recovery, and living with Quality of Life. Especially at home. Especially in front of them are children and spouses. Life is too short to live poisoned by ugly, abusive, self-inflicted, #alcoholism.
So let us join you in encouragement! Please DO GO DRY! We are behind you! Your money can go to better things than the self-destructive to good Causes #alcohol .... .... to your own children, or to orphans who are starving and dying. For real. Because According to the CDC today, the # Occurs alcohol-related death every 51 minutes
You know what I'm talking about. So #alcohol? Get that away from you! You do not need it unless it's a special occasion and you are staying at home.
That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it.
Is "Immunonutrition" Too Big a Word for Patients?
by Dr Margaret Aranda
Slowly but surely, we are going back to nature and the way that God made our body's to work, and maximizing the #Immune System to attack the "bad guys" in the bloodstream and tissues, hopefully leading to effects such as: anti-inflammatory, anti-stress oxidation, decreased free radicals, decreased chronic metabolic syndrome, decreased chronic inflammation, decreased diabetes, decreased cancer, decrease autoimmune disease, decreased "Invisible Illnesses" (It's ALL IN YOUR HEAD!"), decreased swelling of joints and marrow, and who knows? ....
It's all going to happen on a microscopic, cellular & molecular biology basis. We will work on getting better from the INSIDE, OUT! THAT is a novel challenge before us, one which has not yet been adequately explored except perhaps by the JuicePlus+ Company, which has published multiple peer-reviewed manuscripts in scientific journals from pharmacology to Pediatrics, from Canada to England. Watch and wait, for it is coming, and it is going to "snowball" as others take this idea and become as buzzing bees in a beehive.
Hey, it's okay. Let them do it. You know why? Because "It's About Time."
#Immunonutrition.
Can you say it? It is really not hard at all. What we are talking about here is the #Immune System that fights infection, viruses, and cancer; and #Nutrition that adds an "Army" of metabolites, vitamins, and minerals to 'Arm' the body's natural defenses. If you use God's natural, organic nutrition to boost the immune system and fight, INSIDE OUT, for a healthy and non-inflammatory, non-oxidative stress body on a microscopic, cellular and molecular basis, then we have:
Immune System + Nutrition = Immunonutrition
PROBLEM:
Lots of patients are learning about Rare Diseases on the internet. That's good!
Here are a few National groups:
Invisible Disabilities Association (IDA), (I'm on the Advisory Board, so <3)
Social Media Sites for Invisible Illnesses:
And many mainstream, major news media pick up on stories like
Huffington's Post's Chronic vs. Invisible illnesses
USNews Health's Life with a Chronic Illness
Dr Margaret Aranda Drafted "Invisible Illness Petition" to increase MD Education (If you haven't already, please go sign! ~ Thank You!)
So WHERE ARE ALL THE #IMMUNONUTRITION SITES FOR THE CHRONICALLY ILL?
Image of "#Immunonutrition" #Breakfast by #DrM. She likes to call this her "Brain Breakfast," as it is filled with blueberries (prevents Alzheimer's, especially in women); nonfat Greek yogurt (no fruit; plain and high protein); honeydew melon (adds collagen and other skin tissue elements to smooth wrinkles, make skin look young); chia seeds (omega-3 fatty acids for heart health); and ground flax seeds (high fiber)...and what could be better? If you freeze the fruit, make it into a smoothie and add JuicePlus+ Protein Powder! Build those muscles 20 min after a workout, and bust that brain out into the brilliance budding within! We'll look under the microscope later and see what's going on in the cells and molecules, but hey! Isn't this enough to make you go grab it? Dr Margaret Aranda's original recipe, just for you! Get better from the INSIDE, OUT!
COMING SOON! DR ARANDA'S WEBSITE:
"#Immunonutrition & Chronic Illness"
So take heart!
OH! And P.S. I tried to talk about this in 2012....but the response was uhmmm....underwhelming but here it is for you: salmon dinner for #Immunonutrition ! Cool! I'll be posting all my meals as we eat them!
So get ready to make a new grocery list, okay?
Chronic Illness Put me "Away" for a Time
by Dr. Margaret Aranda
I hadn't realized that it's been two years since I posted a blog here. But don't take that as laxity, disinterest, or laziness. For those of you who know me, I know that you know better than that.
Since we have so many new viewers, Friends, Followers, and people in our Circles, let's do something different. Instead of telling you my story, my Personal Testimony of what landed me here on this page in the first place, let us have someone else tell the story for us:
Video 1. Dr David Cannom and Dr Margaret Aranda.
Interviewed by Denise Dador of Channel 7 KABC News                 in Los Angeles, California, here is a testimony of "what                 happened."
Really surprisingly to me, it is too hard for me to even watch this clip, even now, 7 years later. But it was just the beginning, just a blink of an eye, and POOF! I didn't even know it, but life as it had been was now to be forever changed. I would never be the same.
I ended up being a rather highly intelligent MD, a USC medical student graduate, and a graduate of two medical programs at Stanford, both anesthesiology and critical care. My highest position was that of Interim Chief of Anesthesiology at the Philadelphia Veterans Hospital in Pennsylvania. It was a 'hard town,' and to me it was a City of "Unbrotherly" Love. Harsh and unforgiving, it actually prepared me for the 'rest' of my life.
I'll open up a little more later on, but for now it is important to know that above all else, I always had a connection, a spiritual connection, with Jesus. Even in second grade, I accepted his death on the cross for my sins, and comprehended what he did in laying down his life. And I loved him for it. I just loved him so much.
That love stayed with me all my life, even to this day. It gave me faith and perseverance, guidance and a Plan. It led me through dark days and nights, for over three years, of having my own iv going in through a PICC line that kept me alive by giving me maintenance fluid. And the ludicrous part was that it was my profession to watch those tear-shaped drops fall, one-by-one, into my patients, not me.
So I sit here now, arriving at a place and a time when I am ready to share my journey through my own health. I was in the only medical school that had a mandatory Nutrition class in the country, Oral Roberts' University School of Medicine, before transferring out to USC. And I was always athletic, being on Swim Team since 5th grade, running cross-country, playing racquetball with men only (since my Dad taught me how to play, and playing with other girls was just not a competition), and learning how to throw a football with my Dad. He was my hero, indeed. I didn't realize how much of a hero he was to me, not until well after his death. Ah, but that story is also for another day, another time. Not now.
I started cooking when I was 13 years of age, and made good food and extravagant desserts all my life, up until the car accident rendered me unable to walk or talk. Then my brain injury left me with no 'hunger' sensation, and I had to be reminded to eat. When I was finally well enough to be certified in Age Management Medicine, I changed everything. I became the book, that unwritten book, that I preached. And I've been on a diet of Immunonutrition ever since then, perhaps 3 years now.
Do I think it has helped me? Well, I used to be hospitalized 1-2 times per month. Now, I haven't had a hospitalization in ?2 years. And I could go on, but I'm tired. I just want to introduce this concept to you:
"Every bite of food that you eat either kills you or it makes you live longer."   ~  Margaret Aranda, MD, Ph.D.
Stay tuned for more. And I did write an entire Chapter on Immunonutrition in my book on Women's Health, Archives of the Vagina: A Journey through Time. It's been out there for a year. You can find it here:
www.drmargaretaranda.tateauthor.com/other-works
Thank you. See you next time. I'm welcoming myself back, since there doesn't seem to be anyone to do so with or for me at the moment. I smile, because I'm tough. No worries.
Women, Health & Wellness, ROCK ON! Even if you have an Invisible Illness!
by Dr. Margaret Aranda, MD
Invisible Illnesses, we made National News!
Women, Health & Wellness, ROCK ON!
Well, this was a fascinating journey with an energetic comrade in time, fellow Baby Boomer Tom Matt. He has made one of his life's efforts to bring awareness, health, fitness, and energy to the Baby Boomers of today, and Hat's Off to him for such a grand accomplishment!
He asked me to be interviewed for his show, and honestly I can not recall how exactly it came about. That's the fuzziness about brain injuries...they make some memories hazy, but you know they happened. The week prior, we had a 'Pre-Interview' where we were introduced and received and exchanged background information. Tom is just the kind of guy that you don't want to stop talking to; he is charismatic, and his brain is filled with knowledge and justice.
The first thing I noticed about Mr. Matt is his energy. It is dynamic, compelling, and contagious. I could visualize him as a person who runs 10 miles/day, or multitasks effectively yet comes home to a wonderful wife and family. And still, he has time to pay attention to them, as they re-center and re-connect him to the world, to his own life, and to his own purposes. But on to my interview, some of which may have needed to be edited out because I talk too much sometimes. Just sometimes.
Mr. Matt was able to take me on a walk to my past. To age 13, where I made 35 sandwiches/day for 7 children, 5 days for the week. At 14, I picked garlic in the Gilroy fields with the migrant field workers, and Bill Withers' "Lean on Me" was blaring from a transistor radio. That song still takes me back to the fields, and to A & W Root Beer, where we went every Friday with our $0.35/bucket. Those root beer floats never tasted so good, before or since.
I think we mentioned when I ran away at 16, entering Junior College. I forgot to mention I got chicken pox and dropped out, only to go to Cosmetology and then Real Estate schools, gaining both licenses by the time I was 19. Graduated college in 1985, USC Medical School in 1990, Stanford anesthesiology in 1995, Stanford Critical Care in 1996. I forgot to mention that I also got Board Certified in Forensic Medicine and Certified in Age Management Medicine.
The big elephant in the room was that my daughter and I were in a car accident in 2006, leaving me bed-ridden for the better part of seven years now. I was getting better until January of 2013, when a doctor let me drop onto the hard wood floor, sustaining another traumatic brain injury and requiring crushed DDAVP or pituitary hormone now, and probably for the rest of my life. I'll probably always struggle with pulling nouns out of my head (expressive aphasia), and stuttering that will stay with me just like my long nails  ~ just a part of who I am. Some people even finish the end of my sentences for me, and you're not supposed to do that to a person with a brain injury. The patient needs the mental exercise.
He asked me how I did it, how I survived seven years in bed. I said the answer was in Book 2, Stepping from the Edge. Soooo many people have asked, and basically, my answer is "one day at a time". But the book has lessons at nearly the end of every chapter, is individualized, can be used for Bible Study, and allows you to see the difference between 'believing' in God vs. 'acting like you believe'. Enough said.
The podcast came out today. At the end of the show, he asked me to summarize, in one word, my advice to others. If you know me for any length of time at all, you know what I said.
